Renewable Energy- making it work

Renewable energy (RE) is derived from natural processes that are replenished constantly. In its various forms, it derives directly from the sun, or from heat generated deep within the earth. Included in the definition is electricity and heat generated from solar, wind, ocean, hydropower, biomass, geothermal resources, and biofuels and hydrogen derived from renewable resources. Today there is a strong argument that RE should not just be viewed as a sustainable power generation (and energy vectors as in the case with hydrogen) but rather as a potential social solution that, if deployed correctly, could be a big advantage to society beyond the advantages of reducing climate change.

In October 2022 Energy Material donated $265 to set up a microgrid energy generation system that supplements the amount of power used by Energy Materials from the grid, Energy Materials is pledging back the cost of energy Energy generated from the microgrid generation system at the same rate as that of conventional grid supplied power.

EnergyMaterials Pledge rules
1- For a minimum duration of 10 years, you / organisation will pledge money at a cost at the same rate, as grid supplied electricity in the area where the renewable installation is installed.
2- Any user / organisation that receives renewable energy equipment will agree to follow the same pledge rules.
3- In the event the pledge can not be maintained, equipment should be donated at zero cost to someone who can maintain the pledge for the use of the renewable energy equipment.
4- Equipment does fail, costs should be deducted from funds pledged, to replace components; however, to understand component failures, this should be reported to the community.

Our current RE microgrid system consists of 200W of photovoltaic panels and a 100W bicycle powered generator. As of the beginning of 2025 we have saved 41.06  kg of CO2
The bike generator was removed from the system at the beginning of 2025 due to the bike being used for commuting purposes and will be reconnected to the generator later in the year.

If you set up your own system and follow these rules, we would love to hear about how you get on.

Three key parts:
Solar panels

pv_panels

Generates DC voltage from sunlight
Blocking diode

blocking_diode
Protects the solar panels from reverse current
Grid tie inverter

grid_tie
Converts the DC voltage from the solar panels into an AC voltage and phase matches with the house grid.

* There are periods in time where a loose electrical wire reduced peak installed capacity. i.e. there should have been more energy generated for this month.

RE 2025
2025_chart
2025 saw the bicycle generator being removed from the system (this, along with the bicycle was given away free to a new home via facebook market place). A total of 38.63kWh of electrical energy was generated in 2025. This saved 13.4kg of CO2 based on Low carbon power

RE 2024

2024 concluded with no issues. A total of 34.67kWh of electrical energy was generated in 2024. This saved 13.5kg of CO2 based on the US mix of electricity for 2022.

RE 2023
2023update

2023 concluded with no major issues. The only recorded issue was one loose wire that occurred in the month of July and was noticed and repaired in August. A 100W bicycle powered generator was added in the month of September and there have been no issues. A total of 31.67kWh of electrical energy was generated in 2023. This saved 12.38kg of CO2 based on the US mix of electricity for 2022.

RE 2022
2022update
For the three months that the solar panels were installed, 2022 ran with no issues. A total of 4.30kWh of electrical energy was generated in 2022 for the 3 months of operation. This saved 1.68kg of CO2 based on the US mix of electricity for 2022.
